Are you considering a career shift and wondering what life might be like as an independent life insurance broker? Working in life insurance is an incredibly rewarding profession where you can make a positive difference in people’s lives.
If you are contemplating a jump into the life insurance industry, read on for an insider’s look into the work life of a life insurance broker at Principled Life.
Daily Job Duties of an Independent Life Insurance Broker
At Principled Life, potential customers call our office to ask our brokers for life insurance information. This is unique in the life insurance world, as our independent life insurance advisors do not make cold calls or generate their own leads. Instead, our brokers bypass the hassle of finding leads, and their primary mission sets them apart from typical sales agents. Principled Life brokers are there to answer questions and shop for our customers, doing the hard work of finding the right policy from one of the nation’s top insurers so our customers don’t have to.
TDK’s brokers operate under the assumption that clients are reaching out to learn about life insurance and possibly purchase a policy. They strive to assist clients in finding the right policy for their individual circumstances by researching and presenting policy options from TDK’s trustworthy carriers. The broker will guide them through the process and ensure they understand the different aspects of each policy. Once a customer has decided on a specific policy, our broker then works with the insurance company to finalize the application and ensure the customer is properly insured.
Other specific daily tasks include:
- Applying for and maintaining licensing
- Administrative tasks
- Tracking calls and inputting information into a CRM
- Following up with potential and previous clients
- Filling out questionnaires and identifying great life insurance options
- Walking clients through the process of purchasing a policy
- Continuous on-the-job learning
What makes a great life insurance broker?
At TDK “success” is not solely determined by commission earnings. Unlike other companies where a life insurance broker’s salary is primarily based on commission, TDK provides their brokers with a stable income and the opportunity for additional earnings. So, when our brokers were asked what makes a great broker in their environment, they used the following descriptions:
- Patience
- Consistency
- Compassion for their client’s needs
- Someone who listens and understands the needs of their clients
- Growth mindset (being willing to evolve and make changes)
How do TDK’s brokers describe their office culture?
Principled Life is a young life insurance brokerage that launched in June 2022. Last year, our brokers took a chance and joined a start-up company in Saratoga Springs, New York. When asked about why they took the leap, they discussed the company’s visionary CEO, Todd Horowitz. Todd works closely with the brokers and takes the time to coach and mentor them daily. The brokers value Todd’s dedication to creating positive and supportive employer-employee relationships and genuinely appreciate his (and co-founder Kevin’s) leadership style. Here’s what a couple of brokers had to say:
- “I believe in Principled Life because, quite frankly, I believe in Todd Horowitz. I related to him so much, and I truly believed in his vision and what he is trying to create.”
- “I think Todd and Kevin have the right framework for people to come here. I am able to do my job with a lot less stress. The environment is very laid back.”
Another highlight of TDK’s office culture is that collaboration and inclusivity are at the forefront of everything they do. It’s a dynamic environment where growth and learning are encouraged and nurtured. The brokers understand that their success is interconnected and are always willing to lend a helping hand to their colleagues. This supportive atmosphere fosters an environment where everyone can reach their full potential, creating a thriving workplace filled with motivated and driven individuals.
- “As Principled Life grows, the company makes this experience as easy and fluent as possible, and we learn a lot.”
- “The environment is an open, helpful environment. It’s not overly competitive, but instead, everyone is helping others, learning from others, and everyone is trying to reach the same goal.”
- “No one is left out to dry. The people around motivate you to be better and do better, there’s always someone walking around to help.”
- “There is a mutual respect, and everybody wants that enjoyable work environment. It’s something that doesn’t have to be forced with us. It just comes naturally.”
Work-Life Balance as a Life Insurance Broker
While the sales industry is known for demanding work schedules, TDK brokers enjoy a 9-5 workday and have the flexibility to tackle additional tasks as needed. Despite putting in extra hours, they still prioritize their personal lives and enjoy a good work-life balance. Our brokers appreciate the autonomy they have, allowing them to attend to their personal responsibilities once their daily tasks are completed. Outside of work, they enjoy hobbies such as sports, personal development, family time, language learning, and cooking. They value the freedom to disconnect from work once they leave the office, creating a healthy separation between their professional and personal lives.
A Daily Schedule
The following is a typical daily schedule for a Principled Life broker.
- Work day begins anywhere between 9:00 and 10:00
- Many brokers come in around 9:00 to check emails, do some follow-up calls, and plan for the day.
- At 10:00 AM, the brokers begin taking phone calls.
- With the way the calling system works, brokers get free time in between calls, where they like to hang out, take breaks, and eat lunch or snacks.
- Live calls end around 4:00/4:30. The rest of the day is spent following up with clients, working on personal development and training, and completing administrative tasks for the day.
- For many, the end of the workday is flexible. Some end their work day at 5:00, while others may leave the office a little later.
