Compared to other careers, becoming a life insurance broker is relatively easy. In terms of education and experience required, you only need a high school diploma and you don’t have to have prior sales experience to succeed as a life insurance broker. In fact, the brokers at Principled Life come from a variety of backgrounds, including the culinary arts, foster care, retail management, and real estate. However, they all have one thing in common – they care about other people.
Though the main requirement for becoming a broker at Principled Life is compassion for others, the training process can be challenging for some. That’s why at TDK, we support our brokers through every step of the learning process. Most importantly, we don’t stop at just showing you how to get a life insurance license; we walk you through the process and continue to develop you as a broker to help you reach your full potential.
The Onboarding Process
The journey to becoming a life insurance broker begins with a comprehensive and supportive onboarding process. This training and onboarding process begins in Principled Life’s training office, where new agents become accustomed to other new coworkers, listen to live calls, and learn the basics that will help jumpstart their careers.
General Onboarding Timeline
- Week One: Agents spend time studying for state licensing exams and other life insurance tests and learning about Principled Life’s company culture.
- Week Two: Agents take their exams and listen to live calls to learn from their experienced coworkers.
- Week Three: Agents apply for state licenses, learn sales scripts, set up their sales seats, and submit contracting.
- Week Four: New agents will be fully immersed in practical learning, taking calls, and receiving personalized coaching from TDK’s top brokers.
How to Get a Life Insurance License
Becoming a licensed life insurance broker is essential for success and growth in the industry. At Principled Life, we understand the importance of obtaining a license and are committed to supporting our brokers every step of the way. With licenses currently in 48 states, our goal is for all of our brokers to be able to serve clients in every state.
To obtain a license, brokers must:
1. Complete any required state education courses
2. Pass the state insurance licensing exam
3. Pass the background check
We believe our brokers shouldn’t have to fund their way into a career and the Principled Life team works hard to make this process as stress-free as possible for new brokers. One way we do this is by covering all costs for training, education, exams, and application fees.
How long does it take to get a life insurance license?
Becoming licensed to sell life insurance in a specific state can vary in terms of length of time and requirements. Obtaining a license typically takes anywhere from a couple of days to several weeks. To streamline the process for new brokers at Principled Life, we prioritize obtaining licenses in states with the simplest requirements first. This allows brokers to quickly gain hands-on experience in the field.
Insurance Broker Training: Ongoing Support
Brokers at TDK believe being a successful life insurance broker requires more than just compassion for clients or knowing the basics of how to sell life insurance; it requires dedication to ongoing learning. That’s why the training office at Principled Life is designed to be an immersive and supportive learning environment. Here, new brokers are paired with experienced sales professionals who act as their group leaders and mentors. Group leaders guide new brokers through live calls, provide feedback, and meet with them regularly for check-ins and growth opportunities. This close-knit community of experienced and inexperienced agents fosters an environment of mentorship and growth and helps new brokers quickly develop the skills they need to be successful in the industry.
Additionally, Todd Horowitz, one of Principled Life’s founders, takes a hands-on approach to supporting brokers. Every day, Todd works alongside brokers and meets with them, offering guidance, feedback, and coaching. He teaches valuable sales techniques, terminology, and insider tricks to help brokers succeed. With a focus on teaching without embarrassment and praising successes, Todd inspires and challenges brokers to reach their full potential. This personalized approach creates a supportive, mentorship-focused environment that drives brokers to achieve success.
