After working in funeral homes for many years, a group of funeral directors in Utah sympathized with the many families who struggled to pay for funeral arrangements. In 1948, these funeral directors got together and formed Sentinel Mutual Insurance Company. As Sentinel Mutual Insurance Company grew over the next ten years, it went through many name changes and in 1957 it officially became Sentinel Security Life Insurance Company.
